Medical Acupuncture for Dry Mouth (Xerostomia) Now Available at Swedish

The Swedish Cancer Institute (SCI) and Aliea Herbert, MD are pleased to offer a new medical acupuncture service for head and neck cancer patients treated with radiation therapy. Severe dry mouth, or xerostomia, is a common symptom during and after cancer treatment that causes salivary glands in the mouth to produce less saliva. Recent studies have demonstrated that acupuncture can meaningfully prevent symptoms and significantly improve symptoms for at least 6 months using a prescribed treatment plan.

This advancement in medicine is great news for Swedish patients and demonstrates SCI’s commitment to using the latest treatment innovations. Dr. Herbert is trained in medical acupuncture and now offering this supportive service to patients undergoing radiation therapy.
