When MSSA, a serious bacterial infection, attacked Donna D.’s spine and blood, it left her completely paralyzed and nearly took her life. The team at Spine Specialists within the Swedish Neurosciences Institute (SNI) quickly worked together to develop a treatment plan for this rare condition that could have claimed Donna’s mobility for the rest of her life. With their collaborative approach, Donna’s doctors were able to restore her health and help her maintain an active life.

"In the Swedish Neuroscience Institute, we have multispecialty doctors and our team here is very experienced. It's kind of like one-stop shopping. You come in and you're able to see all these specialists. You get two, three, four doctors involved in the case. It's not just one person. Overall, that really has a huge impact on the patient as well as the case," says Rod J. Oskouian, M.D., Chief of Spine, Swedish Neurosciences Institute (SNI).

The unique approach of providers at the SNI allows them to provide progressive treatment for a wide range of brain, spine and central nervous system conditions or injuries. With world-class neurologists, neurosurgeons and an inpatient neurology team, patients get the best care possible in one location so they can achieve their goals on the road to recovery.

Spine Specialists (at SNI) offers services for:

Conditions:

  • Neck and back pain
  • Scoliosis, kyphosis and other spine deformities
  • Degenerative spine diseases such as spinal stenosis and spondylolisthesis
  • Benign and malignant spinal cord tumors
  • Fractures and other spine injuries
  • Disc herniation

Treatments:

  • Surgery
  • Pain management
  • Physical therapy
  • Massage therapy
  • Epidural steroid injections

  • Laminectomy
  • Microdiscectomy

"A little over a year ago, I had what I call a catastrophic health failure," says Donna. “Today, I am in excellent condition and I'm not paralyzed at all. I went from near death to excellent condition with no discomfort or limitations. They saved my life and kept me from being paralyzed.”

“There’s nothing more rewarding than going home and feeling like you really made a difference for somebody,” says Dr. Oskouian.
