Parents and caregivers often have many questions about vaccines for their infants, young children and teens. And they have good reason to because there's a lot of of incorrect information and misinformation floating around out there. Medical experts widely affirm that vaccinations are a crucial part of your child’s health and integral to keeping them healthy and safe. Elizabeth Meade, M.D., pediatric medical director at Providence Swedish (and a mom), explains why vaccines are so important.

"Vaccines are designed to protect children from serious illnesses and diseases," says Dr. Meade.  "And we categorize them into into two primary groups."

  1. Primary series of vaccines for infants:
  • These are given to young infants to protect them from some of the most dangerous diseases.
  • They include vaccinations for illnesses like Hib (Haemophilus influenzae type b), measles, and other infections that can cause symptoms, serious illness, and even death in children.

2. Boosters and annual vaccines for older kids:

  • As kids grow, they get booster shots to maintain their immunity.
  • Annual vaccines, such as those for the flu and COVID-19, are also important to keep older kids protected.

One of the common concerns parents have is if vaccines are safe and if they work. Dr. Meade emphasizes that routine vaccines given to children are both safe and effective.

"These vaccines have a long track record of protecting children from deadly diseases that were once widespread in the United States," says Dr. Meade.

It’s natural to have questions or concerns about vaccines. For concerned parents and caregivers, Dr. Meade advises that the best place to start is with your child’s doctor. They can answer any questions you might have and provide information and develop a vaccination plan that works best for you and your family.
