Dr. James Porter, medical director for robotic surgery at Swedish First Hill, received this year's Menon Award, which is presented annually at the North American Robotic Urology Symposium.
James Porter, M.D., medical director for robotic surgery at Swedish Urology First Hill, received the prestigious Menon Award at this year's North American Robotic Urology Symposium (NARUS), which was held Feb. 2-4 in Las Vegas. NARUS is the world's largest and most comprehensive meeting on urologic robotic surgery, bringing together elite robotics experts from major academic centers across North America.
The Menon Award is named for Dr. Mani Menon, an American surgeon whose pioneering work helped lay the foundation for modern robotic cancer surgery. Dr. Menon is the founding director and distinguished chair of the Vattikuti Urology Institute at the Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, MI, where he established the first cancer-oriented robotics program in the world.
"Dr. Menon’s vision and work changed the way prostate cancer is treated surgically and this has improved the outcomes for so many men," says Dr. Porter. "He has been a mentor to me and receiving the award named after him is one of the highlights of my career. Being recognized for my contributions to the field of robotics by my peers is rewarding."
Dr. Porter is the most experienced surgeon using the da Vinci robotic system in the Pacific Northwest, having completed more than 3000 procedures. He is one of the top five practitioners in the nation, specializing in prostate, kidney cancer and urinary constructive procedures. Dr. Porter also serves as the medical director for robotic surgery at Swedish Urology First Hill and directs the Robotic and Laparoscopic Fellowship in Urology at Swedish. In addition, he serves as director of robotics for Providence Health and Services.
Dr. Porter's contributions to the field of urologic surgery include the advancement of several groundbreaking surgical techniques employed to treat kidney tumors and testicular cancer in young men. He's also trained thousands of urologists around the world in these surgical procedures and helped solidify Swedish's reputation for excellence in the field.
