Did you know that heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States? But there are steps you can take to prevent it; one way is to start understanding your own potential risks.
“High blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, smoking and obesity are all common risks for heart disease," says Lee Chang, M.D., a Providence Swedish cardiologist. “Family history is also an independent risk factor for heart disease, especially for individuals with a family history of early onset disease. In general, the development of heart disease in a first degree relative— parent or sibling—before age 55 in men or age 65 in women suggests a significant family history.”
“You can begin making changes today that will lower your risk of heart disease and improve your overall health,” says Dr. Chang.
“Quit smoking, exercise more (at least 150 minutes per week of moderate intensity exercise or 75 minutes per week of vigorous aerobic exercise), maintain a healthy weight, adhere to a Mediterranean diet and manage your stress,” he adds.
