Every day, emergency departments serve as the front door of the U.S. health care system, treating everything from minor mishaps to life‑threatening trauma. In 2022 alone, U.S. emergency rooms logged about 155 million visits, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention—roughly 47 visits for every 100 people nationwide.

While chest pain and breathing problems grab headlines, injuries remain a major driver of ER care. Unintentional injuries account for more than 26 million emergency department visits each year, with everyday events like cuts and lacerations, falls, and motor vehicle crashes leading the list. Falls are the most common cause of injury‑related ER visits across nearly all age groups, particularly among older adults, while car crashes continue to send millions of drivers and passengers to emergency rooms annually. Even seemingly minor cuts can require urgent care when bleeding, infection risk, or damage to deeper tissues is involved. Together, these common scenarios explain why so many patients end up seeking emergency care—and why prevention matters.

Meet Alexandra Rackoff, M.D., an emergency medicine physician at Providence Swedish Redmond, who shares the top five reasons patients come into the Redmond ED and some guidance to help make sure that you never become on of her patients.
